October 11th, 2017 Meeting Minutes
Heritage Hall, Licking County Aging Program
Welcome:
President Eileen McNally welcomed all to our October meeting. The theme for the month was “Giving Thanks a Second Time”, and she read an article from Guidepost Magazine, to think about the fact that our many blessings are worth being thanking for more than once!
Lunch was shared, provided by Creative Catering.
Program: Eileen introduced Lakewood High School drama teacher, Martha Stickle, who presented her high school group with an early look at their Holiday drama/musical program, “It’s A Wonderful Life”.
She shared that the program will be presented at the school Nov. 17th & 18th, at 7:30,
*There will also be a free Sr. Citizens Matinee on Nov. 16th, at 9 AM, if interested.
Business Meeting/Reports:
Eileen opened business meeting...
Secretary: Minutes from August’s meeting were on the tables, and you can find them online following the meeting.
*Please direct any corrections/additions to Eileen or Linda.
Care & Concern...You are also reminded to please write down the names of any members needing a card from us to lift them up in various circumstances. And, please get those names to either Linda or Eileen between our meeting dates.
Treasurer Report: Treasurer Debra Shelly reported the following as of Oct. 1st, 2017-
Checking: $2,483.78 Savings: $1,144.55 Scholarship: $3,069.00 CD:$4,861.61
Donations collected today were announced:
$158 was collected towards our Scholarship fund.
$40, plus items, donated for the Food Pantry...this month going to the Baby Pantry.
Community Services: Nothing reported today.
Legislative: Karen Butt reported information from STRS: Health Care distribution should be solvent through 2034 at least. Remember that we are not guaranteed health care coverage, but it is a benefit that STRS is working hard to keep it for membership.
Costs will continue to rise unfortunately. Ohio has one retiree that is 104, and there are about 190 members over age 100 receiving benefits! Presently there is a new Executive Director. Please continue to look on the STRS website for important updates.
Membership: Mary Ellinger reported that they began collecting 2018 dues at today’s meeting. Remember that anyone who pays their dues for next year by our Feb. 2018 meeting will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Gift Card!
Scholarship: Remember that it is our contributions that fund the scholarships! Keep your donations coming in, about $1,200 would be a good amount for the year.
*Remember, as stated in our August meeting, we changed our current scholarship program in our by-laws: Instead of awarding it to high school students, we now want to award current classroom student teachers, at OSUN, etc. for costs of many materials needed at that time, and we also plan to give grants to first years (1-5) teachers grants for materials in their classrooms.
Updates/Notes shared:
Eileen again addressed the continuing discussion about meeting venue. Although the recent survey showed that there was a slightly higher number wanting to go to Stacey’s, those NOT wanting to go to Stacey’s were more vocal in their reasons. Eileen also shared that Stacey’s would not have the double room available, so having any groups for our programs would not be possible. We already have our contract through December 2017 with Heritage Hall. The Executive Board agreed we should continue to remain at Heritage Hall except for the Feb. meeting (which will be at Stacey’s due to not needing to pay a caterer if meeting is cancelled due to weather). Eileen asked that anyone with any other suggestions they feel would be better for our group to please let her know before we sign the 2018 contract.
Our next general meeting will be Dec. 13th at Heritage Hall. Donation items for Food Pantry will be laundry items.
*Our meeting beginning time MAY NEED TO BE CHANGED due to scheduling issues with the children and WILL BE ANNOUNCED WITH RESERVATION EMAIL if changed.
And, please respond to email about the meeting to reserve your lunch, as we need a correct number for the caterer.
*Join us in December for opportunity to win Door Prizes!
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Leffel
